Abstract

In the manufacture of resin by copolymerizing an unsaturated polyester with an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, products free from surface-tackiness are obtained by using as the polyester one substantially free from the residues of alpha, beta-unsaturated carboxylic acids and which contain the residues of (a) carbic anhydride or a derivative thereof in which one or more of the hydrogen atoms in the pentane ring structure not containing the ethylenic unsaturation is replaced by a substituent (e.g. chloro or methyl) and (b) a polyhydric alcohol containing at least one beta, gamma-ethylenically unsaturated ether group. Specified polyhydric alcohols are the alkyl-, methallyl-, ethallyl- and chlorallyl ethers of glycerol, trimethylol ethane, trimethylol propane, pentaerythritol and sorbitol. The polyester may also contain the residue of ethylene, propylene or diethylene glycols or of adipic, succinic or phthalic acids. Polyesterification may be effected in the presence of hydroquinone or tertiary butyl pyrocatechol. Specified monomers are styrene, vinyl toluene, divinyl benzene, acrylic or methacrylic acid esters or amides, esters of vinyl or allyl alcohols and vinyl ketones. Copolymerization is effected in the presence of a peroxide catalyst (e.g. methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, methyl isobutyl ketone peroxide or cyclo hexanone peroxide) and, possibly, a promoter (e.g. a cobalt or vanadium salt).
