Abstract

Esters, suitable for use as plasticizers, are made by reacting (a) the "heavy residues" formed as by-products in the production of di-olefins from mono-olefins and formaldehyde or the hydrolysis products of such " heavy residues " with (b) an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid free from ethylenic or acetylenic unsaturation or a functional derivative of such an acid (e.g. an anhydride, acid chloride or ester of a low molecular weight alcohol, or the corresponding ketene). The acid may be monocarboxylic (e.g. acetic or stearic) or polycarboxylic (see Division C3). In Example 7, the " heavy residues " are reacted with acetic anhydride in the presence of sulphuric acid. Specifications 825,034, 863,136, 863,137, 863,138, 863,139 and 884,809 are referred to.ALSO:Esters or polyesters are made by reacting (a) the "heavy residues" obtained as by-products in the production of conjugated di-olefins from mono-olefins and formaldehyde or the hydrolysis products of such "heavy residues and (b) an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic mono- or poly-carboxylic acid free from ethylenic or acetylenic unsaturation or a functional derivative of such an acid (e.g. an anhydride, acid chloride or ester of a low molecular weight alcohol, or the corresponding ketone). Specified acids are acetic, stearic, suberic, adipic or phthalic. The esters or polyesters may be used to plasticize polyvinyl chloride or rubbers. They may also be used in association with unsaturated esters in the production of thermosetting resins. In examples, the "heavy residues" or their hydrolysis products are reacted with (1) phthalyl chloride in the presence of chloroform and pyridione; (2)-(4) phthalic anhydride in the presence of xylene or tetrahydronaphthalene and, possibly, of copper filings and p-toluene sulphonic acid; (5) dimethyl adipate in the presence of sodium adipate; (6) phthalic anhydride in the presence of activated alumina; (7) acetic anhydride. The product of Example (1) is mixed with polyvinyl chloride and calcium stearate. Specifications 825,034, 863,136, 863,137, 863,138, 863,139 and 884,809 are referred to.
