Abstract

Unsaturated polyesters are made by reacting an a ,b -unsaturated dicarboxylic with either (a) a diol obtained by hydrogenation of a dimerized linoleic ester or (b) a diol obtained by uniting two linoleic ester molecules via 1 to 4 molecules of styrene followed by hydrogenation, which probably has the formula <FORM:1065734/C3/1> where n is 1 to 4. In examples, unsaturated polyesters made by reacting fumaric acid, phthalic anhydride, a diol as defined under (a) or (b) and, possibly, ethylene glycol were dissolved in styrene and the mixture catalysed by methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and cobalt naphthenate.
