Abstract

842,495. Magnets. DARWINS Ltd. Nov. 18, 1958 [Jan. 18, 1958], No. 1785/58. Class 35. [Also in Group XXIII] A magnetic workholder, scriber block or the like comprises a block composed of two mild steel parts 7 and 8 separated by an inclined brass strip 9 secured by brazing and brass rivets. The block has a blind cylindrical bore in which a magnet 1, with cupshaped mild steel polepieces 5 and 6 cemented to it, may be rotated by a handle 13. The polepieces, which are internally tapered as shown, are separated by a gap 4 inclined at the same angle as the brass strip 9. In the " on " position the gap and the strip are in register and the flux path between the polepieces is completed by an external workpiece or the like while rotation of the magnet through 180 degrees causes the flux to be short-circuited through the block. Stops 14 (Fig. 4, not shown) on one polepiece co-operate with a screw at the blind end of the bore to locate the " on " and " off " positions, which may be indicated on a legend plate adjacent the handle. The magnet assembly is retained by a screwed plug 11, and the block is relieved on three sides to leave proud ends 19 serving as poles while the fourth side is shaped as shown to hold cylindrical workpieces indicated at 27 and 28. Any side may have a tapped hole 24 for a screwed post, blanked by a screw 25 if not required.
