Abstract

737,576. Magnetic work-holders. SADLER, T. July 29,1953 [Aug. 14, 1952], No. 20477/52. Class 60. A magnetic work-holder comprises a block composed of two magnetic yokes 6, 7, Figs. 2 and 3, separated by a non-magnetic gap 9 and embracing a permanent magnet 1 which can be rotated either to a position in which the yokes form opposite poles or to a position in which the yokes act as keepers and thus absorb most of the field of the permanent magnet. The yokes are formed with inclined surfaces 12 to form a V-block for hokling round, square, hexagon and irregular shaped bar and with feet 13 separated by a strip of brass 14 or other non-magnetic material to hold the block on a support. Fig. 4 shows a modified construction in which the yokes are divided into three sections by non-magnetic spacers 15, the middle section being constructed so that the whole of its flux passes through the work while the end sections make full contact with the surface on which the block stands. The magnet is made in three sections 111, 112, 113 which may be independently rotatable by the provision of clutches. In both constructions the yokes and separators are held together by screws. A flat top may be substituted for the inclined faces 12.
