Abstract
717,660. Eddy current brakes. FERRANTI METERS, Ltd., D., and WRIGHT, L C. Nov. 27, 1953 [Dec. 29, 1952], No. 32824/52. Class 35 A meter disc braking arrangement comprises two braking units each of which includes a yoke and two permanent magnets mounted side-by-side, but spaced from each other, on one side of the yoke. Fig. 1 shows a meter disc 1 having a top unit with a yoke 3 carrying two permanent magnets 5, and a bottom unit having a yoke 4 and permanent magnets 6. The two magnets in each unit are so located and spaced from each other as to have two free poles of opposite polarity. In a modification, a pair of soft iron pole-pieces 9 are mounted on the sides of each of the yokes opposite to those of the magnets and they are separated from the yokes by non-ferrous spacers 10.. A screw 11 forms a variable magnetic bridge between each pair of the pole-pieces 9 so as to alter the reluctance of the return path of the magnetic flux. The braking of a twin-disc meter may be effected by providing one such braking unit for each disc. Specification 690,923 is referred to.
