Abstract

1,146,989. Electromagnetic forming. GULF GENERAL ATOMIC Inc. 30 Oct., 1967 [7 Nov., 1966], No. 49169/67. Heading B3Q. An electromagnetic forming element 11 comprises a surface 12 defining a current path for producing a magnetic field, a second surface 50 contiguous with one end of surface 12 for conducting current to or from surface 12, a third surface 17 opposite surface 12, and a recess 14, 16 proximate the second surface 50 and extending from surface 17 towards surface 12 to concentrate current towards surface 12 so that the strength of the forming magnetic field is substantially undiminished near and at the corner between surface 12 and the second surface. The element may be a field shaper or, as shown, a single-loop coil for working internally (shown) or externally of a workpiece and having at least one gap 13 the surfaces of which are the second surfaces 50. The element includes a segment 18 and a segment 19 containing the gap 13, the segments being machined from a single piece of metal or formed separately and joined by brazing. Supply lugs 21, 22 are provided and a coolant passage 29 closed by a brazed-on cover (17), Fig. 3 (not shown).
