Abstract
1309434 Arc welding apparatus SIMMERING-GRAZ-PAUKER AG FUR MASCHINENKESSEL-UND-WAGGONBAU 5 May 1970 [9 June 1969] 21654/70 Heading H5H [Also in Division B3] An arc 3 is made to rotate around the edge of an electrode 2 of closed loop cross-section by means of a polepiece 5 which may either have an energizing winding 6 as shown or may be formed as a permanent magnet, the electrode 2 surrounding one end of the polepiece 5 and being surrounded by a magnetic plate 8 which is connected to the other end of the polepiece 5 by flux return members 4, 7. As shown, the members 4, 7, 8 constitute a magnetic housing supplied with coolant, e.g. argon or water, through aperture 12. Alternatively, the member 8 may be a magnetic plate and the members 4 and 7 may be limbs of a conventional magnetic yoke. Workpieces 9, 10 are welded together by the device shown, the arc 3 being rotated around the weld seam by the magnetic field. If it is desired to weld a magnetic tube internally to a plate, the polepiece 5 is elongated projecting from housing 4, 7, 8, beyond the weld seam, the annular electrode carried thereby being opposite the line of the weld. The housing 4, 7, 8 rests on the exposed end of the magnetic tube which thus acts as part of the flux return circuit. In Fig. 5, a device for coating a surface with metal comprises a rectangular electrode formed by two non-consumable parts 2c, 2d and two consumable parts 2a, 2b. If the work travels in a direction transverse to the consumable part electrodes 2a, 2b the arc travels around the edge of electrode 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d, and one or two layers of coating metal are deposited depending on whether the consumable parts are of the same or dissimilar metals. If the work travels parallel to the consumable parts 2a, 2b, two coatings are applied side by side.
