Abstract
In arc seam welding steel workpieces from one side only the groove 6 is backed by a granular or sintered flux 3 containing 5-75% iron powder and supported on a flat or grooved copper bar. Submerged arc welding, gasshielded arc welding or unshielded arc welding may be used. Welding may be performed in a single pass or in two passes, the first being with a carbon dioxide shielded arc and the second with a flux-submerged arc or by tandem submerged arc welding. The backing flux includes non-metallic components and optionally deoxidizers, e.g. Al, Mn, Si. The non-metallic components contain more than 75% of one of the following compositions in Darts by weight:-
