Abstract
633,223. Magnetic work-holders. NEILL & CO. (SHEFFIELD), Ltd., J., and BOWER, W. L. Jan. 23, 1948, No. 2089. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXXV] The working-surface poles 2, 3 of a magnetic chuck or work-holder diminish in width and thickness in the direction of the flux so that a transverse section at any point is at least equal in area to the operative surface on the opposite side of the section to the source of flux. The poles, which interfit and have a white metal separator shown at 4 and 7 in Fig. 4, are held in assembled relation by rivets 8. To de-magnetize the surface 1, a permanent magnet 12 provided with a handle which also serves as a pointer is rotated through 90 degrees, a slot 13 and a locked screw 16 serving to limit this movement. The work is positioned by plates 20 which are secured to sides of the surface 1 and are adjustable for height. The surface 1 may be circular and the taper of the poles may vary so that their ends are of uniform thickness where they emerge on the circumference. The ends of alternate poles may be connected as shown in Fig. 15. For large surfaces, the multiple construction of Fig. 16 is used. The holder may be fed by an electromagnet.
