Abstract

<PICT:0842165/IV (c)/1> Textiles are laundered at sub-atmospheric pressure in water at mains temperature into which ozonised air has been introduced. The textiles are placed in a rotary washing drum 2 within an air-tight container 1 into which air is admitted through a slot 4 from a valve 5 after having been passed over ultraviolet emitters 6 whereby ozone O3, and oxozone, O4, are formed. A hood 7 covering the drum 2 is provided with a flexible ring 8 making sealing contact against the container 1 and a lifting or bailing device, not shown, for feeding water from the washing bath in a finely divided state to the slot 4 whereby the droplets of water dissolve the ozonised air. Air and water is continuously removed from the container 1 through a valve controlled pipe 10, which may be adjustable in height, leading to a vacuum pump, not shown. The valves 5 and 10 are adjusted to maintain a reduced pressure within the container, the magnitude of which may be continuously varied. A drain-pipe 9 is provided for drawing-off the water when rinsing or introducing a fresh charge.
