Abstract

842,079. Charge forming apparatus. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Feb. 27, 1959 [May 23, 1958], No. 6896/59. Class 7(3). In apparatus for forming the combustible charge for an internal-combustion engine, a single thermo-responsive element so controls a choke valve and the idling position of a throttle valve that the choke valve is open at an engine temperature lower than that at which the throttle valve is permitted to move into its normal idling position. When the engine is cold the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1. The lug 66 engages the lever 58 to retain the choke valve 12 closed and the link 54 engages the upper end of the slot 56 to hold the cam 46 in the position in which the screw 44 is opposite the high step to maintain the engine at high idling speed. When the engine warms up the lever 40 rotates clockwise (Fig. 4). When it has rotated through 35 degrees the lug 66 on the rotary member 60 has moved through 70 degrees and the air flow in the induction system is able to open the choke valve fully open. If the throttle valve is left in its idling position, that is the screw 44 is in engagement with the cam surface 52-while the engine is warming up the lost motion connection enables the link 54 to move the end of the link sliding in the slot 56. If however the throttle valve is opened the cam rocks clockwise under gravity. As the engine continues to warm the lever 40 moves through the remaining 35 degrees and the cam 46 rocks clear of the screw 44. The end of the lever 30 opposite to that acted on by the thermo-responsive coil 34 is articulated to a piston 38 responsive to the vacuum in the induction system. The cover plate 36 to which one end of the coil 34 is secured is adjustable. A certain movement of the thermo-responsive element results in a larger angular movement of the choke valve than of the cam 46.
