A piston valve 11 loaded by a spring 17 and opening to relieve excess pressure to an outlet 16 when the inlet pressure, applied at 14 to the end of the piston, overcomes the force of the spring has a waisted portion 12 of the piston and a surrounding chamber 18 so formed that fluid entering the chamber is caused to circulate to apply an opening force to a curved shoulder 23 of the valve.
