Abstract

840,757. Filters. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. Sept. 25, 1958 [Oct. 10, 1957], No. 31688/57. Class 46. [Also in Group XXVIII] Spacing of adjacent pleats 3, Fig. 3, of a filter element 8 of resin impregnated paper folded along lines 2, Fig. 1, to form an annular series of pleats with axially extending fold lines is effected by lines of dimples 4, 6 running parallel to the fold lines. As shown the halves of each pleat 3 are spaced by lines of dimples 5, 7 running parallel to and near the outer and inner fold lines respectively. In a modification, adjacent pleats 11, Fig. 4, are spaced from each other by a single line of dimples 12 near the outer fold lines 14 and the halves of each pleat are spaced by a single line of dimples 15 near the inner fold lines 16. In a further modification, spacing dimples are provided only on alternate halves of the pleats and in a still further modification pleats 30, Fig. 8, are spaced apart near the outer fold lines by lines of abutting dimples 32, 33 and the halves of each pleat are spaced by lines of dimples 35, 36 touching the plane surfaces of the pleats although for convenience is not so shown in the figure. In the above constructions the inner dimples are shallower than the outer ones and the ends of the pleats are secured together by lines of adhesive.
