Abstract

840,420. Master-key locks. YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING CO. June 24, 1958 [July 30, 1957], No. 24040/57. Class 44. In a group of locks which are operated collectively by a master key and individually by a servant key, each lock has a casing 4 and a bolt 6 slidable within the casing. The bolt has a lath with parallel limbs 6a, 6b having notches 7a, 7b, respectively for engagement by the servant and master key. The lath has guide-slots 8 engaging fixed pins 9 within the casing, and a talon 13 on the casing passes through the limb 6a and engages gates 12 in security levers 11 pivoted at 10. The levers. 11 are engageable by levers 16 pivoted at 15, and the servant key may be inserted into the keyhole 14 with its shank in the upper circular portion 14a to actuate the levers 11 directly; alternatively the master key may enter the keyhole with its shank in the lower circular portion 14b to actuate the levers 11 through the levers 16. In use, the bit of the servant key positions the levers 11 to release the gates 12 from the talon 13, the bit then engaging the notch 7a to slide the bolt; the master key, which is rotated in an opposite direction to the servant key, engages the notch 7b also to slide the bolt.
