[Class 44] A lock comprises a spring latch with means for retracting it, and a second latch carried on a keyactuated plate which is movable linearly into and out of position directly to obstruct retraction of the spring latch. A pack of plates controlling the admission and rotation of the key may be provided comprising fixed ward plates and other plates displacable by the key linearly into and out of direct locking engagement with a carrier of the spring latch. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the spring latch 2 is carried on a plate 5. Below the latch is a pack of fixed ward plates, positioned by one or more pins 7, and associated with movable plates 9 with openings 12 in which the key engages to raise or lower them. In the locked position shoulders 13 on the plates engage behind a flange 14 on the latch plate 5, and a spring 18 engages in notches in the plates in locked or unlocked position. The latch is withdrawn when unlocked by a sliding member 19 operated by an external knob. In the form shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the movable plates 9 are disposed to one side of the keyhole 8, and a second spring-latch 31, key-operated, is provided. The latch 2 is withdrawn when unlocked by a push button 22, Fig. 6, having a wedge piece 25 acting on a wedge piece 27 on the latch plate. In the construction shown in Fig. 10, the latch 2, carried on a plate 5, is withdrawn by a push button. A second latch 41, is carried on a plate 42 sliding on a pin 43, on which are a set of fixed ward plates and a movable plate 45. In unlocking, the key retracts the latch plate 42 and raises plate 45 which lifts a spring 48 out of locking engagement. In locked position, a lug 52 on latch plate 42 engages a lug 53 on latch plate 5.
