Abstract

Artificial marble, e.g. slabs which can be ground or polished, is manufactured by admixing 5% by weight, of water into a dry mixture of white cement of La Farce type, powdered marble and a coloured inorganic pigment, e.g. a metal oxide, and kneading lumps of the wet mix in a differently coloured pigment to form substantially spheroidal coated masses which are filled into moulds together with binding cement, vibrated, pressed, e.g. at 2,000 to 2,850 p.s.i., and allowed to set. A preferred dry mix comprises, by weight, 1 part white cement, 2 parts marble powder and 0,3 parts inorganic colouring pigment. The lumps of wet mix may be conveniently kneaded by introducing them, together with the differently coloured pigment, into the end or ends of one or more rotating inclined cylinders the coated spheroidal masses formed being removed from the lower end or ends thereof.
