Abstract

A material suitable for building purposes is prepared from material comprising clay by forming plastic clay into particles, providing each of the particles with a coating which prevents them adhering to each other and then bringing together the coated particles and a bonding material so that the bonding material surrounds the particles. The coating may be formed by lime, cement or sand, by transient heating of the surfaces of the particles, or by chemical action e.g. acid. The bonding material may comprise water with cement, trass, lime or plaster of Paris, and include such additional materials as sand, gravel, coral or lava. The clay may be rendered porous by the incorporation of gas-evolving products prior to the formation of particles, According to an example, two parts by weight of naturally moist clay are first crumbled into particles which are then coated with one part of sharp edged sand, and the coated particles are mixed with 9%, based on the total, of cement to form a concrete that is adapted to be cast and tamped in moulds made of steel sheets or in separate moulds. Lime may be incorporated with the clay during crumbling.
