Abstract

At least the surface at the firing end of a ceramic spark plug insulator is produced by sintering a blend consisting of SnO2 or of another tin compound which is converted during firing to SnO2 and BeO in certain specified proportions and 1 to 5 parts of a flux comprising a magnesium silicate and an alkaline earth oxide or another alkaline earth compound which is converted during firing to the oxide. The blend may be used to form the entire insulator or only a portion thereof as the firing tip or the surface of the tip. A plasticizer or binder e.g. from 1 to 2 parts of bentonite is also preferably employed in the blend. Calcium carbonate or whiting is a convenient alkaline earth compound. Barium carbonate or strontium carbonate can also be so employed. The corresponding oxides may be used. Talc is a convenient magnesium silicate, for use as part of the flux.
