Abstract
Royal jelly, preferably taken direct from a bee-hive, is preserved by dissolving it in water, buffering the solution, e.g. with citric acid and trisodium citrate or disodium hydrogen phosphate, filtering the resulting solution and then freeze-drying it, e.g. at a temperature between -5 DEG and -10 DEG C. and a pressure under 50 microns of mercury. The moisture content of the freeze-dried product may be brought to 0.1% or less, by weight, by subjecting it to a pressure under 5 microns of mercury and a temperature over 20 DEG C. Before the solution is filtered, lactalbumin or gliadin may be dispersed in it to stabilize its protein content. The filtered solution is preferably dried in dark glass bottles, which are then filled with a dry inert gas and hermetically sealed.
