Abstract

838,431. Illuminated instrument panels. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 19, 1956 [June 28, 1955], No. 18714/55. Class 75(4) A trans - illuminated panel has an instrument aperture, an aperture to receive a light source and a reflecting surface arranged to direct light from the source into the instrument aperture which would otherwise be incident on the edge of the aperture at an angle greater than the critical angle of the material of the panel. The reflecting surface may be plain, spherical, elliptical or parabolic and may be formed by making a slit in the panel and polishing the wall of the slit adjacent the light source and instrument apertures; by applying metal foil to the wall of the slit; by coating it with a reflecting layer; or by forming a reflecting surface on a thin strip of methyl methacrylate polymer and inserting the strip in the slit. In one form, the panel comprises a sheet of transparent material 10 having a coating 11 of white plastic material covered by an opaque layer 12 of black plastic material. The back may have a light reflecting layer 13 except round the instrument aperture 14 which is of frusto-conical form. Apertures 16 are provided to receive the light sources 17 and two pairs of plane reflectors 18 are arranged symmetrically to the light sources and instrument aperture. Forms having parabolic or part-spherical reflecting surfaces adjacent the light sources or a single elliptical reflecting surface surrounding both sources and the instrument aperture are also described.
