837,490. Speedometers. DANIELSON MANUFACTURING CO. May 21, 1957 [June 6, 1956], No. 16113/57. Class 106 (3). [Also in Groups XXV and XXXIV] A speedometer cable end housing and gear assembly of plastic material comprises a laterally-flanged cylindrical wall portion 2 joined by an annular wall 3 to an inner coaxial tubular body portion 1, a gear-wheel 12 having an integral stem 13 rotating within the body portion 1, and locking means 11 on the body 1 co-operating with a groove in the stem 13 to limit axial movement of the gear 12. The sheath 16 of the cable is held in a tubular extension 4 with the squared end 151 of the cable extending into a square hole in the stem 13. A clamp 18 can be used to hold the housing in a gear-box wall, the stem 13 having a helical groove in it that draws back any escaping oil. Radial flanges are included between the cylindrical wall portion 2 and the part 1 for rigidity. Alternatively the clamp 18 and the radial flanges are dispensed with and, instead, a cylindrical wedge is driven in between the portions 1 and 2 to make the housing a force fit in the opening in the gear-box wall. The assembly is preferably of nylon in order that it may be self-lubricating.
