Abstract
1447465 Supporting centrifuge bowl INTERNATIONAL EQUIPMENT CO 18 March 1974 [20 March 1973] 11831/74 Heading B2P [Also in Division F2] A flexible shaft 10 for driving a centrifuge rotor has a shaft protector 12 surrounding a flexible portion 2 of the shaft, the clearance between protector 12 and a member 36 on a shaft portion 28 being sufficient to allow flexing of the shaft to eliminate vibration (for self-balancing of the driven member) but preventing the shaft flexing to a point which would result in permanent deformation of it. The protector 12 couples shaft 10 to a motor output shaft 14, screws 56 holding the sides of a slot 52 of the protector 12 together to grip shaft 14 and an enlarged end portion 30 of shaft 10 in bore 58 of the protector. The opposite end 28 of shaft 10 frictionally engages in a bore 32 of a rotor adaptor shaft 20, this shaft having a tapered sleeve 22 fixed for rotation with it through a pin 48. The sleeve 22 has slots 46 so that it can readily deform to prevent jamming of the centrifuge rotor on it. The shaft 10 and sleeve 22 can be of stainless steel, the adaptor shaft 20 can be of titanium and the protector 12 of aluminium.
