The amount of end play between the bearings of a small electric motor is controlled by mounting on the shaft of the motor a distancepiece whose effective length can be reduced by applying axial pressure to the shaft after assembly. Sleeve k is assembled on shaft a with its conical neck I engaging socket m in rotor b so that there is no end play between bearings d, e. Axial pressure P is applied and neck l is pushed further into recess m so that end play x is present. In a modification, a barrelshaped bush is assembled on the shaft which distorts when axial pressure is applied to give the required end play.
