Abstract

1381182 Ball and socket joints ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 30 March 1972 [2 April 1971] 14956/72 Heading E2F In a plastics material socket of a ball and socket joint the socket has two annular flanges 4 and 5 defining an annular groove 6 therebetween adapted to be inserted into a hole in a support member 7 forming part of a windscreen wiper drive linkage. The length of the groove 6 in the axial direction of the socket is dimensioned to be narrower than the thickness of the support member 7. A plurality of radial slots 14 is provided in a collar 13 surrounding an opening 1 through which the ball is insertable into the socket and the annular flange 4 is of larger external diameter than the annular flange 5, the former flange 4 having an inner diameter equal to the inner diameter of the groove 6 such that when the socket is pressed into the hole in the support member by a tool 16 the larger flange 4 is deflected from its natural position and exerts a force on the support member to eliminate free play between the socket and the support member.
