Abstract

837,276. Securing elements to shafts; expanding pulley gearing. ALLIS-CHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. May 14, 1956, No. 14950/56. Class 80 (2). Means for securing elements to shafts comprises an axially split bushing having an inner shaft engaging surface and an outer tapered surface and an axially split sleeve having a complementary tapered bore, the bushing having a slot with a depression in the bottom and the sleeve having a complementary slot and an opening intersecting the slot, means coacting with the depression and the opening providing relative axial movement of the sleeve and the bushing. A split externally-tapered bushing 4 is keyed to a shaft 2 and has a longitudinal slot 22, the bottom of which has a depression 28 in the tapered surface. A split sleeve 8 with a complementary tapered bore 9 is keyed at 6 to the bushing and has a longitudinal slot 29 complementary to the slot 22, towards the end of the slot 29 is a cross-slot or receiver 30. A bushing element 35 is anchored in the depression 28 and a sleeve element 37 is located in the receiver 30. A screw 38 with different diameter threaded portions 39, 40 draws the two tapered members together to grip the shaft 2. An expanding pulley having twin conical tread members 12, 13, is keyed at 20 to the outside of the sleeve 8, relative axial movement of the flanges being provided by a screw 19 having a larger diameter head of opposite hand 18 partially seating in the receiver 30. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 720,123.
