Abstract
837,022. Refrigerating. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Feb. 28, 1958 [Feb. 28, 1957], No. 6805/57. Class 29 A chamber in an aircraft or missile is refrigerated by evaporating a liquid such as water or methanol under a partial vacuum induced by a jet pump, the working fluid for which is high pressure air bled from the compressor of the jet propulsion plant. As shown in Fig. 1, the evaporating tank 3 is connected by pipe 7 to the jet pump 8 and the cold is conveyed to the chamber 2 to be cooled by a liquid circulating system containing oil or water or water and glycol. Alternatively evaporation may be effected directly in chamber 2. As shown in Fig. 2, evaporating tank 16 is connected to pump 8 by pipe 18 and is supplied with liquid as required from reservoir 17 through pipe 20 and control valve, orifice, or pump 21, reservoir 17 being under atmospheric pressure or, as shown, under pressure derived from the high pressure air supply through adjustable valve 22. At high altitudes, the jet pump may be rendered inactive.
