Abstract
872,213. Cooling systems for engines and like apparatus. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. July 25, 1958. [Aug. 13, 1957], No. 23995/58. Class 64(3) [Also in Group XXIX] A pressurized cooling system in which an .engine 20 or other mechanism developing heat is cooled by a liquid or liquid-gas mixture circulated by a pump 28 between the heat source and a heat exchanger 20 through which coolant is circulated by way of pipes 32, 34, is provided with a. pressure control.system (see Group XXIX) comprising a vessel 36 having a vapour chamber 46 above a liquid chamber 40, a heating means 42 for heating at least the liquid chamber, and a flow-dividing conduit 50 coupling a liquid portion of the pressurized fluid system to the vapour and liquid chambers respectively, such that liquid entering the vapour chamber condenses at least a portion of the heated vapour. When a surge of pressure occurs in the pressurized cooling system, liquid rises up pipe 50 to close a check valve 48 leading to the liquid and open a check valve 64 leading into the vapour space, and flows on to an orifice shelf 54 through which it drips and condenses some of the warm vapour whereby the pressure is maintained constant in the cooling system. On a decrease of pressure in the cooling system check valve 64 closes and liquid returns through check valve 48 into the system. The baffle 54 may be provided with a weir or be replaced by a spray nozzle and the lower part of the pipe 50 may have a further check valve to allow a portion of surged liquid to enter directly into the liquid space.
