Abstract

801,515. Air turbines. NORMALAIR, Ltd. Aug. 28, 1956 [Sept. 8, 1955], No. 25724/55. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XIII] In an air supply system for a pressurized space of an aircraft or other vehicle, some or all of a quantity of air from an air pressure source is cooled by expansion through a turbine d which drives a fuel pump h. The air pressure source may be an engine-driven compressor supplying air by a pipe 3 to heat exchangers a and c in which it is cooled by air leaving the space and by fuel oil, respectively, before passing to the turbine d, the exhaust of which is connected to the space by a pipe 2. The temperature in the pressurized space is controlled by automatically regulated by-pass valves e, f, g. Fuel from the main supply line 7 passes through a jet pump k, the pump h in which the main flow is returned from outlet to inlet through restricted passages n, a restricted orifice o and the heat exchanger c, the outlet of which is connected to the line 7. The pump h, which may have a single- or double-sided centrifugal impeller with clearances from its casing forming the passages n, supplies the nozzle of the pump k which keeps the pressures sufficiently high to avoid cavitation. Fuel may be drawn from and returned to the supply tanks instead of the line 7. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifccation 768,546.
