A sanding or like machine comprises a frame having mounted thereon a contact roll and a second roll, an endless working belt entrained over said rolls, means for rotating one of sand rolls so as to create an approach flight of the belt to the contact roll, and means adjacent each edge of the approach flight of the belt for redirecting the belt toward the centre of the contact roll should the belt move laterally of the roll. A sanding machine, particularly for objects of irregular shape such as a hide 38, comprises a sanding belt 34 entrained over rolls 20 22 carried by uprights 12, 14 within housing 10. The contact roll 20 has a helically grooved rubber sleeve 23 and is driven by a motor to impart to the belt a linear speed of 3000-6000 ft. /min. ; a pressure roll 24 within housing 26 co-operates with the contact roll 20. The inclination of the shaft of idler roll 22 with respect to the shaft of the contact roll 20 is adjustable by a member 28 so as to centre the belt 34 before sanding begins. The uprights 12 14 carry inwardly directed brackets 42, 44 on each of which is pivotally mounted an arm 58 having secured thereto by screws 70, 72 a blade having a convex surface 66 ; in a modification, the blade is replaced by a roller 80, Fig. 9, mounted for free rotation on a shaft 82 on the end of the arm 58. The blades are positioned so that they are out of contact with the edges of the belt 34 when the latter is central on the rolls. When a hide is introduced between the contact roll and pressure roll, the belt may travel laterally until one edge engages the blade or roll, the resultant tightening of the edge causes the belt to move back towards central position.
