Abstract

612,013. Lapping-machines. GUEST, KEEN, & NETTLEFOLDS, Ltd., and DICKINSON, E. Dec. 21, 1946, No. 34670. [Class 60] A lapping-machine, having a lapping tool adapted to extend through an opening in the work and to be reciprocated through the opening, includes means for producing relative rotary motion between the work and the tool whereby the latter operatively engages successively circumferentially spaced portions of the wall of the opening in the work, bending means acting upon said tool to bend into bowed form at least the part of it within said opening in the work independently of the lateral thrust of the work upon said parts, the bending means being stationary in relation to the work in the direction of reciprocation of the tool. A reciprocating lapping tool 22 is guided in bushes 21 on brackets 19 mounted, on a baseplate 10, on either side of a pair of bearing housings 25 also mounted on the base-plate 10. Rotatably mounted in the bearing housings 25 and concentric with the bushes 21 is a workholder comprising a pulley part 28 driven by a belt 30 and an inner work-gripping split bush 33 actuated by screws 36. That part of the tool 22 extending through the work is bent towards and to contact an inner wall thereof by a pair of rollers 48, one on each side of the work, mounted on arms 45 adjustably carried by a block 38 slidable in horizontal guides 37 attached to the bearing housings and pressed by a spring 51, on a pin 52 fixed to the block 38, towards the lapping tool, one end of the spring engaging an adjustable abutment 57 and the other end the block 38. The block 38 is adjusted to and from the lapping tool by the vertical adjustment of two wedge-shaped vertical limbs 60 engaging inclined faces on the block 38 and vertical faces on the bearing housings 25. At the rear end of the pin 52 a cross-pin 67 is adapted to engage a cam 66 so that on rotation of the pin 52 it, and thus the pressure rollers 48, are pulled back from the lapping tool. Barrel- and venturi-shaped holes may be lapped. The Provisional Specification states that pressure devices may or may not be used when the axes of the supports for the lapping tool form an obtuse angle with one another and are pivotally adjustable and mounted somewhat out of line with the workholder.
