A sanding and polishing machine comprises, as shown in Fig. 1, an endless sanding belt 1, a feed roller B for holding the work in contact with such surface, and means for supporting and guiding the belt in the form of a head 47, Fig. 2, having a curved surface faced with a bearing pad 45 of felt, sponge rubber or other yieldable material. The head 47 forms part of an assembly comprising two. pairs of vertical rollers 16, 17, Fig. 3, which guide the belt 1 and are mounted in a framework comprising top and. bottom plates 26, 24 rigidly connected by two vertical members 27. The rollers 16 are mounted between bearings 28 on the two plates with the upper bearings protected by caps 30, and the rollers 17 are mounted between bearings 32 at the ends of vertical arms 31, 33 hingedly carried by collars 35, 36 on the front vertical frame member 27. The arms 31, 33 are adjustable in order to position the rollers 17 bv screws 39. At the head 47, the belt 1 is guided over a band 18 in the form of graphited canvas or a backing strip surfaced with smooth glass' or glass beads, this band being backed by the pad 45 which is mounted, preferably with an intermediate canvas strip, on the curved head 47. This head, which may be of aluminium, is carried on the vertical frame member 27 by side lugs 48 and a pin 49, and is adjustable about the pin by upper and lower screws 52 passing through the member 27. The band 18 is led from a ratchet-controlled drum 54 over a guide 58 and spindle 59 to its position on the pad 45; the spindle 59 has an eccentric shaft 60 so that it may be rotated into a position to clamp the band against the rear of the guide 47. The machine shown in Fig. 1 is provided with a removable cover 2A for most of the belt 1. a vertically-movable worktable 3A, a motor 6A for driving the belt, a separately-driven work feed roller B, and dust-collecting hoods 10A, 13A.
