Abstract

535,506. Sanding machine. FOWLER, B. F. March 27, 1940, No. 5529. Convention date, Dec. 29, 1939. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXVIII] A sanding machine of the kind described in Specification 513,868, comprising a surfacefinishing belt 11, supporting and driving means 2, 3, and a shoe or pressure plate S, covered with a strap of woven fabric 31, is characterized by means for directing a stream of cooling air between the belt 11 and strap 31. This is stated to reduce friction and wear. The cooling means may comprise a flattened nozzle 17 adjacent and ahead of the point of contact of belt and strap and be arranged to discharge air in the direction the belt travels. The strap may comprise a length of belting as used for power transmission, fine grain for polishing steel or hard metal and soft belting for solder or other soft material. It may be tightened over a pad of sponge rubber 30, Fig. 2, and felt 29 and be secured by clamps 32 to a plate 21 rigid on the frame 12. The belt 11 is guided and tensioned by rollers 7, 8 on spring-pressed arms 5, 6. Dust is removed by a motor-driven fan 14 and collecting bag 16. The pulley 3 is driven by a motor 5.
