Class 20(2) An hydraulic pit prop comprising a ram 1 sliding in a cylinder 3 has a pressure relief valve 12, an hydraulic fluid inlet valve 5 and a pressure release valve 9 in the head 2 of the ram 1, the inlet valve 5 and release valve 9 operating in accordance with the pressure of fluid in an inlet duct 4 and a release duct 7 respectively which serve to supply pressure fluid to the prop. The prop is set by admitting fluid to the pressure chamber 6 through the duct 4 and valve 5. Overload pressure opens the valve 12 to allow fluid to escape to a chamber 13 via a duct 14 and to the outside via an annular duct 8 and the duct 7. To remove the prop the fluid is passed through the duct 7, the annular duct 8 and duct 14 into the chamber 13, which thereupon expands contracting the prop. At the same time the piston of the release valve 9 is raised to allow fluid from the pressure chamber 6 to pass through ducts in the piston into a duct 11 and thence to the chamber 13 or to the outside via the duct 4.
