Abstract

835,304. Automatic arc control systems. EASAN ELECTRICAL (PROPRIETARY) Ltd. May 6, 1958 [May 14, 1957], No. 15242/57. Class 38 (4). In an arc-regulating system, a member such as an electrode is controlled by an electromechanical device responsive to signals dependent on the position of the member. An electrode 1 of an alternating current arc furnace is positioned with respect to the shell 8 by an A.C. commutator motor. An armature 6 is energized by the vector difference between the arc voltage between bus-bars 9, 10 and a voltage proportional to arc current, derived from a current transformer 11 and developed across a resistor 13. A field 14 is energized by the vector sum of the arc voltage and a voltage derived from a current transformer 12 and developed across a resistor 17. The arc electrode 1 may be counter-balanced to reduce the motor torque. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the resistor 17 and field 14 are transposed. In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the current transformer 11 is omitted and the armature is shunted by a resistor. In a still further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the resistors 13, 17 are replaced by capacitors or inductors. The commutator motor may be replaced by other electro-mechanical devices having two cooperating windings. The control signals may be amplified to operate the electro-mechanical device.
