Abstract

597,507. Automatic control systems ; A.C. commutator motors ; transformers. VALLIS, L. C. July 16, 1943, No. 11601. [Classes 35, 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] In a system in which an electrical load, e.g. a carbon arc for a cinematograph projector, is supplied through a transformer and an electric motor affects mechanical adjustment of the load, the armature of the motor is located in the magnetic field of the transformer and is supplied with current varying in accordance with an electrical characteristic of the load. In Fig. 1, a motor 8 controlling the spacing of arc electrodes (not shown) has its field constituted by a limb of a transformer 1, the primary 2 of which is supplied from an A.C. source 3, 4, and the secondary 12 of which supplies the arc electrodes, connected to terminals 13, in series with the primary 11 of an auxiliary transformer 10. The motor armature is supplied from the secondary 9 of transformer 10 and the arrangement is such that motor speed is dependent on arc current to maintain the arc gap constant. A switch 6 co-operating with tappings on primary 2 provides a control for striking the arc. Motor 8 may drive, through a flexible drive and/or variable speed gear, right- and left-hand screw-threads engaging the electrode holders.
