Abstract

Reactions are effected, in e.g. hydrocarbons, by carrying the reactants through a nuclear reactor by an inert gas or liquid which may be the reactor coolant, e.g. carbon dioxide, hydrogen, helium and polyphenyls. The reacted products are separated from the inert fluid outside the reactor and unchanged reactant recirculated. The polymerization of ethylene by circulation through a graphite-moderated gas-cooled reactor using carbon dioxide as coolant is described, the polyethylene being tapped in liquid form from the heat-exchanger or filtered in solid form from the gas stream. Specifications 768,666, 768,667, 768,668, 768,669 and 768,760 are referred to.ALSO:Ethylene is polymerized by circulation through a nuclear reactor, the ethylene being carried into and the product carried out of the reactor by an inert fluid, e.g. carbon dioxide, hydrogen, helium or a polyphenyl, which may be the reactor coolant. Propylene and styrene are also referred to. The polymerization of ethylene by circulation through a graphite-moderated carbon dioxide-cooled reactor is described, the polyethylene being tapped in liquid form from the heat-exchanger or filtered in solid form from the gas stream.
