Abstract
1,081,394. Reactors. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. Sept. 7, 1964 [Sept. 6, 1963], No. 36617/64. Heading G6C. In a nuclear reactor, a space is provided, between the reactor pressure vessel and the biological shield, within the thermal shield, for the irradiation of mixtures to offect electrical charges. The gamma-ray component of the nuclear radiation is employed. The irradiated material may be fluid or fluidized and is passed through tubes, or vessels, in the thermal shield zone. The chemical reactions which may be effected are ethylene and hydrogen bromide to ethyl bromide, vinyl chloride to polyvinyl chloride and the polymerization of ethylene. Sulphonic acid can also be formed from sulphur dioxide and saturated hydrocarbons.
