Abstract
1,029,648. Reactors. ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA Ltd. April 6, 1965 [May 22, 1964], No. 14645/65. Heading G6C. Radiolytic oxygen production in the coolant of a nuclear reactor, the coolant being boiling water, a mixture of water and steam, or steam, is suppressed by maintaining in the coolant a concentration of at least 3 p.p.m. of ammonia (i.e. 3 mg. NH3/Kg. H2O). An ammonia concentration of between 3 and 20 p.p.m., preferably between 3 and 8 p.p.m., is generally sufficient. Below 3 p.p.m. ammonia, oxygen starts appearing and nitrites and nitrates are formed.
