Large diameter pipes a, b, are joined by first forming one or more branch apertures c<SP>1</SP>, d<SP>1</SP>, in the sides and welding them together and then joining the open ends e, f, Fig. 1, of the pipes by a pipe bend g or bending the open ends j, k, Fig. 2, towards one another and welding them together. In Fig. 1 the. open ends e, f, of the pipes are reduced to the diameter of the bend g. In Fig. 3 a tubular header v is provided with branches x for connection to corresponding branches on a tube b<SP>2</SP>, the end y of the tube being reduced and connected to a further branch x.
