Abstract
835,010. Laminated springs; springs for railway vehicles. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 9, 1956 [Oct. 14, 1955], No. 29323/55. Classes 103(6) and 108(3) A resilient mounting of a leaf spring 15 on its support 7 comprises a sandwich of rubber-bonded arcuate metal plates 17 arranged convexly towards the support 7, the end of the spring 15 rotating about a geometrical point 1 near its end which remains substantially stationary when the spring flexes under load: As shown, the lowermost rubber element of the sandwich is bonded to an arcuate surface of a block 12 which is held by means of a bolt 115 and nut 116 to the plates of the spring 15. Adjustment may be effected by the selection of a washer 14 of suitable thickness. The uppermost plate 17 is integral with a block 117 having a rectangularshaped plane upper surface 117a and front and rear surfaces 117b. The surface 117a bears on the base of a recess 7a formed in vehicle frame 7. The recess 7a is of greater length than the length of the surface 117a. This permits rectilinear movement of the block 117 as load is applied in the assembly of the mounting. This movement is terminated by the' right hand end surface 117b coming into engagement with the right hand end of the recess 7a. The block 117 is then retained in this position relative to the frame 7 by means of a plate 107 which is secured by bolts 118 to the horn stay 119 and which has a shoulder 107b which engages the left hand end surface 117b. The plate 107 is cut away at 107a to clear the uppermost arcuate plate 17. The horn stay 119 is similarly cut away at 119c for the same purpose. The block 117 may be lightly fixed to the support 7 in a detachable manner. In a modification (Fig. 1, not shown), the uppermost arcuate plate 17 merely rests in a correspondingly shaped arcuate recess in the frame member 7. Instead of securing the block 12 to the leaf spring by means of the bolt 115, a recess in the block 12 engages a humped portion of the uppermost spring plate 15a of the spring 15.
