Abstract

834,459. Rotary hydraulic couplings. HAAR, F., COHEN, A. L., and COHEN, L. H. S. Jan. 28, 1957, No. 2945/57. Class 69 (2). An hydraulic power transmission mechanism has a housing 21, in which the input and output shafts 75, 106 are rotatably mounted. A core member 46 is fixed in the housing. Inner and outer sleeves 84, 85, rigid with the input shaft 75, are rotatable about the core 46 and have two rows 87, 88 of seven cylindrical openings each, in which act ball pistons 89. The pistons 89 are acted on by cam members 90, 91 of non-circular inner surface which are adjustable relative to one another by means of pinion 94, so that the two rows of pistons 89 are either acting together or in direct opposition, or in any intermediate arrangement, giving an infinitely variable flow of fluid, ranging from nil to the maximum. Sleeves 115, 114 surround the output end of the core 46 and are rigid with the output shaft 106. Two rows of seven pistons 118 each move in radial cylindrical openings 116, 117 in the sleeves 114, 115 and act on a cam 104 with inner surface of substantially square section, causing it to rotate. There are two positions of the cam 104 which give rotation of the output shaft in both directions. Fluid is conveyed from the input to the output end by means of a passageway 65 in the core 46. In the walls of the core 46 at the input end there are radial openings 66 opposite each other, which convey fluid from the inner side of the ingoing pistons to the passageway 65, and two grooves 69 which convey fluid to the outgoing pistons 89. At the output end four passageways 68 and grooves 67 convey fluid to the outgoing pistons and four transfer grooves 70 convey fluid away from the ingoing pistons. Fluid pumped out of the output end via grooves 70 is conveyed back to the input end by passageways 61. A ball 64 which is kept tight over an opening 63 in the core 46 by a spring 59, can be moved to relieve excessive pressure in the passageway 65;
