Abstract
Benzene - 1,4 -, naphthalene - 2,6 - and diphenyl-4,41-disulphonic acids are prepared in the form of their alkali metal salts by heating an alkali-metal salt of a benzene, naphthalene or diphenyl mono-sulphonic acid at 250 DEG C. or above. The invention also includes terephthalic acid, terephthalonitrile and high molecular weight polysulphonamides when prepared from these aromatic disulphonic acids obtained as above. The heating may take place at normal or superatmospheric pressures, preferably in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide or argon. The reaction will take place above 250 DEG C. but in the absence of a heavy metal catalyst a temperature of 425 DEG C. is generally needed, an upper limit of 600 DEG C. is mentioned. Catalysts containing chromium, mercury, vanadium and silver may be used. The potassium or preferably the sodium salt is used and the free acid may be obtained from the crude disulphonate by contacting with a cation-exchange resin. In examples: (1)-(8) and (14) sodium and (9) potassium benzene sulphonate is heated under various conditions to give the 1:4-disulphonate; (10) potassium and (11) sodium naphthalene-b -sulphonate is heated with cadmium dust to give the 2 : 6-disulphonate, (12) sodium naphthalene-a -sulphonate is heated to give the 2:6-disulphonate; (13) sodium diphenyl-4-sulphonate is heated to give a diphenyl-4:41-disulphonate.
