Abstract

<PICT:0833996/III/1> A method of applying a coating to an article comprises atomizing liquid containing glass frit, ceramic or like fusible coating material particles whose fineness of grind is represented by 1/2 or more P.C. units on a Fineness of Grind Gauge (see Group XIX), and electrostatically depositing atomized liquid containing the fusible particles on the article. Porcelain enamel slip is fed at a controlled rate, e.g. at 250 c.c. per minute, through a pipe 28 to a disc 21 which is connected to a high voltage source. e.g. 100,000 volts, the articles being earthed. Tubular electrodes 29, 30 are supported at 31, 32 from the ceiling and encircle the path of the articles, which surrounds the disc 21, to prevent overspray. Insulating discs 26, 27 of a diameter slightly less than that of the disc 21 are spaced, e.g. by 1/8 to 1/4 inch, from the disc 21 to assist in the formation of a quiescent atmosphere, e.g. one having air velocities not exceeding 100 feet per minute, in the vicinity of the articles, which pass within 2 feet of the disc 21, which may have a lineal edge velocity exceeding 10,000 feet per minute. The disc may be tilted or the articles may describe a helical path thereabout to obtain complete coating.
