Abstract

833,993. Control of D.C. motors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 14, 1956 [Nov. 15, 1955], No. 32624/55. Class 38 (3). [Also in Group XXXV] A D.C. load such as traction motors M 1 -M 4 are supplied from an A.C. source 12 through a full-wave rectifier 16 and a transformer 10 with a tap-changing arrangement, the centre point of the D.C. load being connected at 21 to the secondary winding of the transformer. In the arrangement shown, connection 21 is made to the centre point of two reactors 19, 20, the ends of which are connected respectively through switches T 0 -T 4 , TT 0 -TT 4 to alternate tappings of two transformer secondary windings 14, 15, the outer ends of which are connected to the A.C. rectifier terminals. These switches, together with P and PP, are operated by a controller in such sequence, tabulated in Fig. 2 (not shown) that, firstly half the voltage of one tap section of winding 14 is applied to motors M 1 , M 3 , secondly half the voltage of one tap section of winding 15 is additionally applied to motors M 2 , M 4 , and then these voltages are stepped up one at a time by half that of a section, each step. In one modification, connection 21 is connected to the centre point of a single reactor connecting through switches, the inner ends of the two secondary windings 14, 15, Fig. 3 (not shown). As both halves of the load must be supplied with the same voltage, corresponding switches connected to each winding 14, 15 must be operated simultaneously, so that the number of voltage steps which may be selected is halved. In a further modification, after the full voltage steps of the arrangement of Fig. 1 have been exhausted, each connection to the A.C. rectifier terminal is transferred from the outer end of a winding 14, 15 to the inner of the other winding. A further similar number of steps is then available as the output voltages now include all that from one winding 14 or 15 and part from the other, Fig. 4 (not shown).
