Abstract
776,966. Transformers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 13, 1955 [Dee. 14, 1954], No. 35769/55. Class 38 (2). An on-load transformer tap-changing system comprises a transformer having a primary, a secondary and a tapped tertiary winding 36, 30, 39 respectively, on a common magnetic core, the tertiary winding being connected at one end or at both ends with one of the main windingspreferably the secondary winding-and being of smaller cross - sectional area than that winding. A tertiary winding 39 of a tap changing transformer 31 is provided with a number of tappings 41 ... 49, this winding being connected, with a series resistance 57, in parallel with the main secondary winding 30. The voltages between taps are taken off by way of a usual centretapped reactor 54 and applied via a reversing switch 56 to the primary winding 52 of a further transformer 33, the secondary winding 32 of which is connected in series with the main secondary winding 30 of the tap-changing transformer 31. The reversing switch 56 enables the output voltage between leads 34, 35 to be the sum or difference of the voltages of the two secondary windings 30, 32 as desired. The resistance 57 preferably has a negative resistance-current characteristic and is provided to prevent large voltages from appearing between ends 58, 59 of the windings 39, 30 and also to prevent appreciable circulating current from flowing in the windings. The use of such a tertiary winding enables the main secondary winding to be constructed in the normal manner with laminated conductors, the strands of which are transposed relative to each other throughout the winding, the tertiary winding may also be laminated, if desired, but need not have transpositions made therein.
