[Also in Group XXIX] A device responsive to the speed of a rotating shaft 7 includes centrifugal means for controlling leakage from the output circuit of a pump 2 which feeds liquid under pressure to an hydraulic servomotor 5 the centrifugal means comprising an expansible split-ring 12 driven in rotation by the shaft and mounted floating in a recess 8 provided in the shaft. The inner surface of the recess is provided with annular grooves 17, 18 in communication via passages 14 with a conduit 16 leading back to the tank 1. A further groove 9 is in communication with the outlet side of the pump via an inlet member 11. The amount of liquid allowed to leak out to the return pipe 16 through the annular space between the outer surface of the ring and the inner surface of the recess decreases when the speed of the shaft increases and the liquid pressure transmitted to the servomotor 5 is thus proportional to the square of the speed. The device can be used for controlling automatic gear boxes.
