Abstract
833,815. Pistons. SZIGETI, E. Sept. 12, 1957 [Sept. 28, 1956], No. 28808/57. Class 122 (1). A piston packing comprises two superimposed sets of ring segments 3 located in a peripheral groove of stepped form consisting of two sets of axially-offset portions 8, with those of one set partly overlapping those of the other set and each of such portions receiving one of the ring segments 3; the ends of the lands 11 of each groove portion form abutments for the ends of the ring segments. The segments 3 may be urged outwardly by arcuate springs or by springs of the corrugated form shown in Fig. 4. The widths X of the lands 11 is less than the widths Y of the groove portions and of the segments 3, the overlapping faces 9 of which make close contact. The segments may be cut from cast metal rings or made of sintered iron, or of plastic material.
