A wheel-trueing unit for grinding machines comprises diamond or like tools 33 on carriers 34 which, when given a traversing movement, are so guided by the curved portions 41 of guide means 35, 36 that the tools radius the edges 49 of the grinding wheel where the side faces meet the periphery. The carriers 34 are mounted on a member 28 reciprocated parallel to the axis of the wheel by an hydraulic piston-and-cylinder device 30 on guide-ways 29 on a member 27. The member 27 is adjustable radially of the grinding wheels on guide-ways 13 by means of a screw 17, which is in engagement with a nut 19 depending from the member 27 and rotated by a hydraulically-actuated pawl 24 and ratchet wheel 23 ; pawls 25, 26 are provided to prevent rotation of the ratchet during its dwell periods. The tools 33 have stems 37 movable axially in the carriers 34 under the control of broad-edged feelers 38 urged into contact with guide blocks 35, 36 secured to the member 27. The guide blocks comprise portions 42 corresponding to the peripheral portion of the wheel, portions 41 corresponding to the side faces and radiused edges, and portions 43 which are provided to guide the tools away from the wheel. When the member 27 is moved from left to right, the right hand tool dresses the periphery, edge 45 and side 48, and then moves away from the wheel, while, at the same time, the left hand tool is brought into contact with and dresses the side 49, edge 45 and then the periphery of the wheel. The guide blocks can be adjusted for wheels of different widths and the feelers can be adjusted to some extent along the axis of the stems 37. A third diamond of larger size may be mounted between the diamonds 33 to dress the peripheral portion of the wheel.
