Abstract

1,110,423. Grinding. NEWALL ENGINEERING CO. Ltd., and S. W. HOARE. 12 Nov., 1964 [8 Nov., 1963], No. 44259/63. Heading B3D. Apparatus for dressing a grinding-wheel 10 having a cylindrical surface and a rounded end portion comprises a device 6 which has a first dressing portion 11 for dressing the cylindrical surface 10a of the wheel, and a second dressing portion 12 for dressing the rounded end portion 10b, the device being moved in a direction parallel to the axis of the grinding wheel so that the first dressing portion dresses the cylindrical surface and the second dressing portion is brought into dressing engagement with the said end portion of the wheel. The second dressing portion may dress a radiused corner 10b of the wheel and the device have a third dressing portion 13 for dressing the opposite radiused corner 10c of the wheel. The device 6 is mounted for movement parallel and perpendicular to the axis of the grinding and consists of a shaft 14 on which is keyed the first dressing portion in the form of a diamond-impregnated annulus. The latter is separated by spacers 17 from the second and third portions 12, 13 which are also diamond impregnated and have profiles complementary to the corners 10b, 10c. The portions and spacers are clamped between a head 15 of the shaft 14 and a washer 18 by a nut 19, the shaft being mounted between centres 21a, 22 and clutched to a head 21 by dogs 20 engaging recesses in the head 15. In operation, the device is advanced perpendicularly to the axis of the grinding wheel until one or other of the corners 10b, 10c is engaged by a dressing portion 12 or 13. The device is then traversed parallel to the axis for the portion 11 to dress the cylindrical surface 10a and the other portion to dress the other corner. The length of the spacers are such that when the portion 11 is engaged with the grinding wheel, the other portions are out of engagement. The central portion for dressing the cylindrical surface may be in the form of a plurality of spaced rings or be formed by a helical rib 26, Fig. 2. In another embodiment, the central portion consists of a single-point diamond and second and third portions comprise non-rotary cutting portions.
